English Workshops
Forms of politeness: 1/2 day seminar (4 hours).
How and when to be formal and how and when to show friendship or good-will by being informal - a particularly American Skill.
Academic writing class for ESL students (32 hours).
This class will provide you with the writing skills you need to participate in university level classes in the United States. Special attention will be paid to: how to organize a paper the American University way; how to use the MLA/APA standards of formatting; how to quote sources; how to train yourself to proofread English; grammar review of common errors in writin. This class is taught by a University Instructor exprerienced in teaching university level writing classes.
The Movie Clue: (Ongoing. 4 hours per meeting).
This class for advanced students meets once a week to view and discuss a classic American movie. The discussion will center on the movie as a cultural experience; we will discuss the moment of American history in which it was made, the kinds of idioms that the film used; and the vocabulary specific to its themes.
The Book Club: (Ongoing . 4 hours per meeting).
Once a month this class will meet to discuss an agreed upon work of American fiction. We might read either classic or contemporary novels, depending on the interest of the participants.
